Balancing quality against file size
Image compression works by discarding detail your eye is least likely to miss. At high quality settings the change is invisible; push the quality slider lower and files shrink further but soft edges and colour banding start to appear. The live size readout lets you find the point where the file is small enough without a visible drop in quality — usually somewhere between 60% and 80% quality for photos. Smaller images load faster, which improves page speed and saves bandwidth for your visitors.
